Character Design: Week7

Based on the last week's cleaned up, I did some turn around. 3/4 back is always tough for me...

Sunday, December 9, 2012

AM: ITA Week11

This is my final submission for this term, but I still get the last e-critique
so I'm still fixing this. My acting is not really great now but I guess I did
okay for the first dialogue animation for 3D.

Holiday is coming!!!!

Cloth Study

It's just a cloth study I did from kids fashion magazine. I started to use this style(drawing rough with color pencil, clean line with pen, and tone with pencil) for life drawing first, but it seems nice with regular illustration too.

Character Design: Week6

This week I just cleaned up one of my characters. I don't really like cleaning up because I often lose some life as I work on...

Sunday, December 2, 2012

AM: ITA Week10

It's almost the end of term, which means I have to finish this. aaahhhh

There were too many twinnings so I fixed...

Almost Winter...

Just colored one of my doodles. It's getting pretty cold in Japan now...

Sunday, November 18, 2012

AM: ITA Week8

Much more developed blocking pass I did. It was first time to animate
a character with actual face in 3D. Little struggled with lots of controls
but it was fun!

Character Design: Week4

more developed designs for Jigimaru and Haidara continuing from week2. It's fun!!!

AM: ITA Week6/7

here's my blocking pass with some change from video ref. I'm still exploring better
acting and timing...expressions will be added after I got good gesture.

AM: ITA Week5

AM stuffs to catch up!!! For the first dialogue assignment, we had to pick 3 dialogues to choose
and those are 3 I found in web. took me really long....

and this is the one chosen and acted out. It's so tough acting this kind of emotional shot because I'm such a clam man...I don't really remember when I got upset last time. anyway, blocking comes next -->

Character Design: Week3

3rd assignment was practicing caricature. Drew realistically as possible first and try 3 pushed caricature after that. Beside it looks like the original or not, I guess I've put good personality on them. I'm starting to get the idea of using graphic shapes and exaggerated proportion.

I've been little lazy to upload things here again, but more uploads coming.

Character Design: Week2

2nd assignment was to create silhouettes for the characters I'm designing through this course. Concept of these characters are Dr.Jekyll and Mr. Hyde(good turns to evil).
In the lecture, I learned how to explore and have fun with simple graphic shapes. I tend to draw generic characters all the time, so it was really interesting and helpful. Maybe some of them aren't enough but I tried to exaggerate as possible I can.

Here's finally polished version of my pantomime shot! It'll be fixed based on my mentors and class mates comments but I would say that this is kinda done. I haven't picked any monologues for my next assignment yet, so It'll be busy next week....

Introduction To Acting: Week1

New term started! Finally acting, something I really wanted to learn more deeply. My new mentor is the man who worked on many of awesome films like Little mermaid, Tarzan, and Cats Don't Dance so I'm crazily excited for this term!
Thumbnails for my new pantomime shot! Hopefully this terns out good!

Quick staging test I did. Some tangents need to be fixed...

and here's my first splined pass. More adjusting of spacing and timing coming! I have to finish this shot on this week! aaaahhh.

Color Ref1

Just having fun with a color reference I got a while ago. It's a cool collection of Japanese traditional color combinations which I talked about on this post. It was fun picking colors first, then draw something from it.

Falling part revised.

Summer3

Experiment of hand drawn-ish coloring. I kinda like it!

Summer2

I hear the noise of cicadas a lot these days. They really reminds me that it's a middle of summer. I used to love catching bugs when I was small. Running around the field without worrying about anything. Good times.

AM ABM: Week7

Even though there's fun events going on, I have to work on this...spend less time than usual but here's my first blocking pass for my weight lifting shot. It's still pretty rough and I definitely have to work on the part when he falls...

Comic Market 82

I went to Comic Market last weekend. This time, maybe the first time in my life, I went there seriously to get specific books. I heard from my figure drawing teacher that some famous animators are selling self-published books at Comic Market. It was sucks that I didn't know until this year...I have to go for it every time from now.

It was sooo crowded and hot like hell, but here's a result...

Woohooo!! Lots of great inspirations!!! This includes animators from Gainax and their drawings are just SO AWESOME!

a page from these. might be deleted....

Sapporo Trip

It was so busy and fun last week so I'm uploading several at once...

I visited Sapporo(where is a part of Hokkaido) with my family last week. It was cool comparing to Tokyo so I could enjoy hot springs. Those are just too great. I love this culture. I've visited some famous places but it was second time to visit Hokkaido, so I couldn't find much new and refreshing things...but at least I enjoyed eating! Lots of awesome foods in Hokkaido. it's knows for fresh seafood.

These pics make me hungry...miss those seafood.

AM ABM: Week6 B

Here's polished version of my balance beam shot. I'm visiting Hokkaido with my family this weekend so I had to submit a day earlier than usual... It says final but still fixing small details.

AM ABM: Week6 A

Here's some plannings for the next shot I'm working for. I guess this'll be much harder than last one, and hopefully I can make it good.

Monday, July 30, 2012

AM ABM: Week5

I'm at the polishing stage for my balance beam shot. Body mechanic things fixed and also timings adjusted so looks much snappy. Almost done!

Art Block Buster: Week11

Summer-ish drawing I did for Art Block Buster. Simplifying is difficult...

Thursday, July 26, 2012

AM ABM: Week4

My first spline pass for the balance beam shot. Timings are little softened but this happens all the time when I turn to spline...so it's time to sharpen this up!

Monday, July 16, 2012

AM ABM: Week3

Here's re-blocked version of my balance beam shot. Some breakdowns added and keys adjusted to make more "push" feeling when he turns. Also, small step added at the beginning to make the shot more interesting. I'm almost ready to spline and make it smooth!

Pokemon Black/White2

Many of enemy trainers got great designs. New pokemons, not really...

I've recently finished the newest version of pokemon, so I drew something related to it. It's already a 5th series, and there're 648 pokemons in total. 648, can you believe that? so crazy.

I wan't expecting much because It's a sequel of Black/White version, but it was actually well made and I had fun playing it. I guess this is the most difficult version in whole series. Many of boss trainers use strong pokemons with strong moves like human would, and also few of them reaches to level 80. There's too many factors to consider for breed and battle in pokemon these days. I started to doubt that pokemon is really for kids...

Monday, July 9, 2012

AM ABM: Week2

My first blocking pass for the balance beam shot I planned last week. Some weights are still missing, but I guess I've put enough keys and timing to show my idea.

Summer

It's summer! It's too hot in Tokyo...I miss Canada, only spring to summer seasons of course.

Updated my profile pic. Same angle but much simplified.

Animation Mentor Advanced Body Mechanics: Week1

New term started! Here's a planning for the first shot. I kinda made things too complicated last term, so I'll try to keep things simple and focusing on body mechanics. I'll put some attitude in the character but not much acting this term. It's always better to take a video reference by my self but I'm too scared to jump on the balance beam. XD

Ghibli Museum

I went to Ghibli Museum today to watch the short film, Mei and the Kittenbus. I kinda rushed to visit there because I realized that screening is ending really soon. I decided to go and got ticket last night, and then went there today's noon...I won't do this again. Here's little info about the short pasted from wiki.

Mei and the Kittenbus (めいとこねこバス Mei to Konekobasu) is a thirteen minute sequel to My Neighbor Totoro, written and directed by Miyazaki. Chika Sakamoto, who voiced Mei in Totoro, returned to voice Mei in this short. Hayao Miyazaki himself did the voice of the Granny Cat (Neko Ba-chan), as well as Totoro. It concentrates on the character of Mei Kusakabe from the original film and her adventures one night with the Kittenbus (the offspring of the Catbus from the film) and other cat-oriented vehicles.
Cute Totoro-ish monsters from Mei and the Kittebus

The actual short was really awesome as I expected. Great actings and physics were there. Lots of supernatural things and creatures in the film but I could really see the deep study from the reality so that all of them were pretty believable. Also I was so impressed with the improvement in the quality of animation comparing to the original film, My neighbor Totoro. Same characters and settings but 14 years definitely improved the quality I guess. It was such a pleasure film to watch. I have no idea why they don't sell DVD of this....

Some cool discovery I had at the museum. It was my 3rd time to visit but this place still inspires me.

The special bus to Ghibli Museum. SO CUTE!

That robot thing from Castle in the sky. It's placed on on the rooftop. pretty big(about 2~3m)

and of course, a goods from Ghibli store. It's pretty obvious but this is a hand towel based on the design from Totoro's opening. How could I NOT buying this? Woohooooo!!!
